Garage door stuck? Safe checks before you call
Garage doors are heavy and spring-loaded. Many stuck doors are a remote or power problem; mechanical faults need a technician.
Safety classification
Safe inspection only
This guide covers safe first actions only. It is not a licence to perform regulated work or enter a dangerous area.
What to do
- 1
Check the remote and power
Replace the remote battery, try the wall button, and check the motor has power and its light comes on.
- 2
Look for obstructions
Check the tracks and door path for objects, and make sure safety sensors are clean and aligned.
- 3
Use the manual release carefully
Only use the manual release when the door is fully closed. Releasing a raised door can make it fall suddenly.
- 4
Do not touch springs or cables
Springs and cables hold enormous tension and can cause serious injury.
- 5
Book a repair
Describe the door type, motor brand and what happens when you press the button.
When to stop
- A cable is loose or a spring is broken
- The door is crooked or off its tracks
- The door is stuck open and the property is insecure
- Someone or a vehicle is trapped
