How to clean split-system air-conditioner filters
Dirty filters reduce airflow, increase running costs and can make a system freeze or leak. Cleaning the indoor unit's filters is routine maintenance most owners can do.

What to do
- 1
Turn the system off
Switch off with the remote and at the isolator or power point if accessible, so the fan cannot start while you work.
- 2
Open the front panel
Lift the front cover as described in your manual. Slide or unclip the mesh filters.
- 3
Vacuum and rinse
Vacuum dust off, then rinse in lukewarm water with mild detergent if needed. Do not use hot water or harsh chemicals.
- 4
Dry completely in the shade
Let the filters dry fully out of direct sun before refitting, so they do not warp or grow mould.
- 5
Refit and test
Refit the filters, close the panel and run the system. Many manufacturers suggest cleaning every few weeks during heavy use.
When to stop
- Water is leaking from the indoor unit
- There is a burning smell, smoke or tripping power
- Airflow stays weak after cleaning
- Ice forms on pipes or coils
