Pool pump not priming? What to check

A pump that runs without moving water is usually sucking air. Most causes are simple, but a pump running dry can overheat and fail.

Safe homeowner task

This guide covers safe first actions only. It is not a licence to perform regulated work or enter a dangerous area.

What to do

  1. 1

    Turn the pump off

Stop the pump at its switch before opening anything. Do not let it keep running dry.

  2. 2

    Check the water level

The water should sit around the middle of the skimmer opening so the skimmer does not draw air.

  3. 3

    Empty the baskets

Clean the skimmer basket and the pump basket, and make sure nothing is blocking the inlet.

  4. 4

    Check the pump lid seal

Make sure the lid O-ring is clean, seated and not cracked, and the lid is tightened by hand.

  5. 5

    Check the valves

Confirm the suction and return valves are open, then refill the pump pot with water and restart.

When to stop

  • The pump still will not prime
  • It hums, trips power or smells hot
  • Water leaks near electrical connections
  • Pipes or fittings are cracked
