Solar inverter showing an error? What to do
An inverter error can come from a grid fluctuation, an isolator, a wiring fault or failing equipment. Solar systems carry high DC voltages, so checks stay visual.
Safety classification
Safe inspection only
This guide covers safe first actions only. It is not a licence to perform regulated work or enter a dangerous area.
What to do
- 1
Note the error
Photograph the display, light pattern or error code, and check your monitoring app.
- 2
Check for a grid outage
Inverters shut down during outages by design. If the street has no power, wait for it to return.
- 3
Look for a tripped solar circuit
At the switchboard, check whether the solar supply main switch has tripped. Reset once only if the area is dry and safe.
- 4
Follow the shutdown procedure only if needed
Use the shutdown and start-up procedure on the signage next to the inverter or switchboard, exactly as written.
- 5
Book a licensed solar electrician
Do not open the inverter, touch isolators on the roof or handle panel wiring.
When to stop
- Smoke, burning smells or scorching
- Water or storm damage to panels, isolators or the inverter
- The error returns after a restart
- Isolators are hot, cracked or discoloured
