What to do

  1. 1

    Switch off the rangehood

Turn it off at the switch and make sure the cooktop is cold.

  2. 2

    Remove the filters

Most mesh filters unclip or slide out. Check the manual if unsure.

  3. 3

    Soak in hot soapy water

Soak in very hot water with dishwashing liquid and a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda for 15 minutes, then scrub gently with a soft brush.

  4. 4

    Rinse and dry fully

Rinse well and let the filters dry completely before refitting. Many metal filters are also dishwasher safe; check the manual.

  5. 5

    Replace carbon filters

Charcoal or carbon filters cannot be washed. Replace them with the model listed in the manual.

When to stop

  • Grease has built up inside the rangehood or ducting
  • The fan or light is not working
  • There is any sign of heat damage or scorching
  • Filters are damaged or do not fit properly
