What to do
- 1
Vacuum loose debris
Use a narrow nozzle to remove dust, leaves and insects from the tracks.
- 2
Loosen the grime
Sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda, spray with a vinegar and water mix or warm soapy water, and leave for a few minutes.
- 3
Scrub the corners
Use an old toothbrush or a cloth wrapped around a butter knife to reach corners and drainage holes.
- 4
Wipe and dry
Wipe clean with a damp cloth, then dry so dust does not stick again.
- 5
Clean the glass and frames
Finish with the glass, sills and frames on both sides where you can safely reach.
When to stop
- Windows are above ground-floor height
- You would need to lean out or stand on furniture
- Tracks or rollers are broken
- There is mould inside the frame or water getting in
