Safety classification

Safe inspection only

This guide covers safe first actions only. It is not a licence to perform regulated work or enter a dangerous area.

What to do

  1. 1

    List every lock

Include front, back, side and garage doors, window locks, gates and any key safes.

  2. 2

    Decide rekey or replace

Rekey locks in good condition; replace worn, damaged or low-security locks.

  3. 3

    Consider keyed-alike

One key for several doors is convenient and can be arranged when rekeying.

  4. 4

    Renters: get permission

Check your lease and state rules. Many states require the landlord's consent and a copy of the new key.

  5. 5

    Book a locksmith

Share the number and type of locks and any upgrades you want, such as deadlocks.

When to stop

  • You are renting and have not got consent
  • Locks are damaged or forced
  • Doors do not close or latch properly
  • You need an alarm or access control system as well
