Storm and roof safety

Roof damage after a hailstorm: what to check

Hail can crack tiles, dent metal and break skylights and gutters. Damage is often not obvious from inside until the next rain, so check soon after the storm.

Safety classification

Safe inspection only

This guide covers safe first actions only. It is not a licence to perform regulated work or enter a dangerous area.

What to do

  1. 1

    Stay safe first

Wait until the storm passes. Keep away from fallen power lines, damaged structures and debris.

  2. 2

    Check inside

Look for new stains, drips, broken skylights or light showing through the roof space.

  3. 3

    Check from the ground

Look for broken tiles, dents on metal roofs, damaged gutters, and hail debris or tile fragments around the house.

  4. 4

    Photograph everything

Take photos and video of the roof, gutters, cars, windows and garden damage for your insurer.

  5. 5

    Arrange an inspection

A roofer can check for cracked tiles you cannot see from the ground. Contact your insurer before permanent repairs if you plan to claim.

When to stop

  • Water is coming through the ceiling
  • Tiles, sheets or gutters are loose and could fall
  • Skylights or windows are broken
  • You would need to climb onto the roof
