What to do
- 1
Check for immediate danger
Call 000 for injuries, fire or life-threatening danger. Stay well away from fallen power lines and assume they are live.
- 2
Call the SES for urgent help
The State Emergency Service on 132 500 can help with urgent temporary repairs such as tarping roofs and removing trees from homes.
- 3
Photograph everything
Take photos and video of all damage before cleaning up. Keep damaged items if it is safe to, for your insurer.
- 4
Protect what you can from inside
Move belongings away from leaks, put containers under drips if the ceiling is stable, and turn off power to wet areas only at a dry switchboard.
- 5
Contact your insurer, then book repairs
Your insurer may have requirements for emergency repairs. Request quotes for permanent roof, glazing, tree or electrical repairs with photos attached.
When to stop
- Ceilings are bulging or sagging
- Water is near electrical fittings
- A tree or branch is on the house or power lines
- The building has structural damage
